In old Shanghai before liberation, big capitalists, warlords, speculators, foreigners, gangsters, and swindlers were rampant. They lived a corrupt life of luxury and extravagance, while the people at the bottom were poor and had a hard life. With a big head, round nose, three strands of hair, and a thin body, this funny looking boy is the protagonist of this film, Sanmao (played by Wang Longji). Sanmao lost his parents at a young age and wandered the streets of Shanghai all day long without anyone to rely on. He was so hungry that he even ate the paste used to brush advertisements, and slept in the garbage truck when he was sleepy. In order to survive, he delivered newspapers, pushed rickshaws, and picked up cigarette butts, but bad luck always followed him, and everything ended in failure. He was kind hearted and did good things, but was framed and beaten. However, Sanmao, who lived in the dark bottom, always maintained an honest and kind character. He never wanted to become a tool for others to do evil for a meal... This film is adapted from the comic strip of the same name by the famous cartoonist Zhang Leping.
